Refugees Seeking a New Beginning

Following the escalation of attacks on Ukraine, the number of refugees crossing the border into Moldova continues to rise. Among those affected are Elena (51) and Vladimir (57), a couple from Zaporizhzhia, forced to abandon their home due to ongoing bombings.

Their decision to flee to Moldova was influenced not only by its geographic proximity but also by Vladimir’s personal ties to the country. He was born and raised in Moldova, but now he faces a severe visual impairment that greatly limits his mobility and spatial orientation. Additionally, the couple suffered a devastating loss — their only son was killed in the conflict in Ukraine, leaving them in deep grief and sorrow.

Upon arriving in Moldova, Elena and Vladimir received emergency assistance at the Safe Space located at Chișinău Railway Station. Specialized personnel provided them with psychological support to help them cope with recent traumas. At the same time, efforts were made to secure temporary housing and ensure access to essential services.

The couple was informed about the necessary procedures for legal residence in Moldova, as well as the available financial support for refugees. Vladimir also received medical assistance due to his special needs stemming from his disability.

Elena was provided with an essential hygiene kit to help ease the transition. Additionally, thanks to the transportation program offered by ACTED, the family was safely transferred to a shelter where they could benefit from a more stable and secure environment.

Recent attacks on Ukraine have included intense bombings, the use of drones, and missile strikes, causing significant destruction in cities like Zaporizhzhia and Odesa. The situation continues to deteriorate, pushing more civilians to seek refuge in neighboring countries, including Moldova.
