Refugees from Donbas: Moldova’s Warm Hospitality Amid the Trauma of War

Zinaida, a 53-year-old woman, along with her 22-year-old daughter Natalia, fled from the war-torn Donbas region of Ukraine and arrived in Chișinău, Moldova. After escaping the war with only the bare necessities in a suitcase, the two women found support and hospitality in Moldova.

“Everywhere we went, we were greeted warmly. At the border, we were given water, food, and tea,” Zinaida recalls about their reception upon arrival. Her daughter Natalia, who suffers from leg problems, received psychological support at the “Safe Space” office run by UNFPA/Homecare on Gheorghe Cașu Street 32. There, they found a safe space to heal from the traumas of war and receive psychological care.

Zinaida expresses deep gratitude to the Moldovan people for the help provided, which made them feel safe. “I want peace so we can go home and no longer live in fear.” The kindness of the Moldovan people was deeply appreciated.

Recent reports from eastern Ukraine, particularly the Donbas region, describe intense Russian attacks targeting both military and civilian objectives. In Toretsk, the fighting is severe, with Russian forces employing heavy artillery, airstrikes, and drones. Ukrainian defenders face significant challenges, especially with the increased intensity of these assaults.

Civilians continue to suffer due to the ongoing hostilities. In recent weeks, residential areas, schools, and hospitals have been hit by rocket and artillery strikes. The constant targeting of civilian populations and infrastructure is creating an increasingly severe humanitarian situation throughout the region.

This activity is part of the “Improving Access to Essential Health and Protection Services for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities” program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in Moldova and funded by the European Union.
