Moldova Supports Refugees

The Republic of Moldova has faced one of the highest per capita refugee waves in Europe since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022. Approximately 200,000 refugees arrived in Moldova in the first three months, with another 600,000 entering later. Although most have returned or moved on to other countries, over 100,000 refugees remain in Moldova, representing about 4% of the population.

International institutions have provided significant support to address the needs of refugees. This support has facilitated the social and economic integration of refugees, alleviating pressure on host households and communities already affected by multiple crises, including energy shortages and high prices.

Maria, a 24-year-old woman from Sumy, Ukraine, faced many hardships both before and after the war began. Although her family managed to endure, the war changed everything. Despite the dangers and being five months pregnant, Maria initially refused to flee, preferring to stay with her family and dogs. Her daughter was born in June 2022 in a semi-occupied town under artillery and rocket fire.

As the situation worsened, her family decided to send Maria and her daughter to Moldova, where they found support in Bălți. There, they received comprehensive assistance from the UNFPA/Homecare center, including psychological support, material aid, and help with integrating into the community. Now, Maria hopes to continue her daughter’s education and find a job to ensure a decent living.

The Safe Space UNFPA/Homecare psychologist’s office at the UNHCR Community Center in Bălți provides emotional support and psychological consultations, as well as informative sessions for women, girls, men, and boys. Topics covered include gender equality, protection from gender-based violence, and access to essential health services. The psychologist also provides useful information on medical consultations, finding employment, and pursuing vocational or higher education.

Additionally, beneficiaries receive vouchers for hygiene products at Linella stores, targeting women and girls aged 12-24. Vulnerable women also receive hygiene kits. Beneficiaries are informed of a trusted phone line to provide feedback to UNFPA.

This activity is part of the program “Improving Access to Essential Health Services and Protection from Gender-Based Violence for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities,” supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) and funded by the European Union.
