Medico-Social Center Launched in Bender, Strengthening Cross-River Healthcare Cooperation on the Nistru
The Medico-Social Center in the city of Bender, operating within the L. A. Tarasevici State Medical College of the Transnistrian region, has officially commenced its activities and was visited by the relevant authorities of the Transnistrian region.
The Center was established within the framework of the project “Improving Cooperation in Primary Health Care Sectors on Both Banks of the Nistru River”, co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) as part of the programme “Supporting Moldovan Communities in Hosting Ukrainian Refugees.”
This initiative constitutes a significant step toward strengthening the medico-social care system and enhancing cooperation between the two banks of the Nistru River, to the direct benefit of the most vulnerable population groups — elderly persons, individuals with chronic illnesses, and persons with disabilities.
The Center is not merely a service-providing institution, but also a platform for professional development and intersectoral collaboration, where medical and social assistance is delivered in an integrated, accessible manner and with full respect for human dignity. In addition, the Center will serve as a training hub for students of the college, providing access to modern medical equipment and advanced care practices, including palliative care.
The multidisciplinary team engaged by the Public Association “Homecare” presented the Center’s mission, objectives, and range of services, thereby reaffirming the institution’s strategic orientation toward becoming a center of excellence, grounded in professional standards and offering genuine support to persons with special needs.
The development of the Center was an exceptionally complex process, encompassing legislative adjustments, reconstruction of the building, procurement of stationary and portable medical equipment, provision of transportation for mobile teams, long-term theoretical and practical training of personnel, and the adaptation of facilities in accordance with the operational standards applicable to such institutions. This process was carried out with sustained effort and made possible through the involvement of donors and relevant stakeholders from both banks of the Nistru River.
The Center’s staff and the national experts involved in the implementation of this project extend their sincere gratitude to the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) for their valuable contribution, as well as to the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) for the professional implementation of the project, continuous guidance, and cooperation during challenging periods.
