Maria Finds Hope Through Support from the Homecare/UNFPA Mobile Team
Maria, a 75-year-old woman originally from Moldova, spent most of her life in Odesa. After becoming widowed at a young age, Maria had to raise her three children on her own. Through hard work, she managed to provide them with an education and saw them grow into responsible adults, each with their own family.
After years of labor, Maria was able to purchase a small apartment by the seaside, where she hoped to spend her retirement in peace. However, due to the war, she was forced to leave her home and seek refuge in Moldova, leaving behind everything she had built.
Upon arriving in a village in Ștefan Vodă district, Maria took shelter with her elderly sister. The stress and trauma of the war severely impacted her health, leading to two strokes. As the only refugee in the village, Maria often feels isolated. However, the Homecare/UNFPA mobile team is always there for her, offering emotional support and listening to her with patience. Through sharing her stories and memories, Maria finds the strength to carry on.
Last week, the mobile team completed its activities in Ștefan Vodă district and has now continued its mission in the communities of UTA Gagauzia. Regardless of the weather conditions, the team has provided support in meeting rooms, in their mobile van, or at the homes of refugees who are bedridden or have mobility issues.
Interventions have taken place in Ștefan Vodă, Căușeni, Cimișlia, and Basarabeasca. The mobile team continues to offer emotional support and social assistance to refugees in affected areas, improving their quality of life during these challenging times.
This activity is part of the “Improving Access to Essential Health and Protection Services for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities” program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in Moldova and funded by the European Union.
