Iurie V. – A Story of Resilience Amidst the War in Ukraine
Iurie V., an 88-year-old man from Sumy, Ukraine, was forced to flee his homeland for the second time in his life. After his hometown became a key target in the intensifying Russian invasion, he had no choice but to leave. At the age of 3, Iurie survived World War II but lost loved ones during that time. Now, in 2024, he is once again living through the horrors of war. “I never thought I would go through something like this again. I believed the danger came from the West, but reality was different,” Iurie said with sadness.
The city of Sumy, located in northeastern Ukraine, has been repeatedly bombarded with drones and artillery in recent weeks. On September 6, the attacks caused multiple casualties and forced many residents to flee from destruction.
Arriving at the train station in Chișinău without documents and money, Iurie sought help from the psychologists at the “Safe Space” UNFPA/Homecare center. Iurie’s gaze reflects a life of suffering, yet also an undying hope. His eyes bear witness to a life marked by war and loss, but still hold a glimmer of hope. The team provided him with the necessary support to secure his livelihood and guided him through the process of legalization.
With the help of a taxi service funded by AO Homecare, Iurie was directed to the Migration and Asylum Bureau, where he began his legalization process. The assistance from the Safe Space staff helped him secure accommodation at a shelter, giving him the safety he needed in these turbulent times.
The situation in Sumy remains extremely tense, and Ukrainian authorities are doing everything possible to protect the civilian population from the ongoing attacks.
