Humanitarian Crisis Escalates: Refugees from Kharkiv Seek Shelter in Moldova
The intensification of attacks in the Kharkiv region has triggered a new wave of refugees heading toward Moldova. Oxana, a 34-year-old woman from Kharkiv, along with her three children, aged 6, 5, and an 8-month-old baby, was forced to leave her home. After recent escalations in nearby areas, she decided to flee to Moldova, leaving behind her husband and parents. At the Palanca border crossing, Oxana sought support from psychologists at the “Safe Space” initiative by Homecare/UNFPA. There, she received the necessary assistance and an essential hygiene kit.
Oxana expressed how impressed she was with the hospitality and stability she found in Moldova, a destination recommended by her friends. Her story reflects the painful reality of thousands of Ukrainian families seeking safety outside their borders amidst the rising violence caused by the Russian military.
In the past week, the situation in Kharkiv has deteriorated rapidly due to intensified attacks by Russian forces on civilian targets. One of the most severe incidents involved a residential building in the city center being destroyed by guided bombs, killing at least three people and injuring more than 34 others, including children. Additional attacks targeted critical infrastructure and residential buildings, affecting dozens of residents, some of whom are in critical condition.
These bombings are part of a broader Russian campaign to destabilize daily life in Ukraine, frequently targeting critical infrastructure and populated areas. As a result, thousands of people are forced to flee their homes in search of refuge beyond Ukraine’s borders, with Moldova continuing to be a key destination for Ukrainians in distress.
This activity is part of the “Improving Access to Essential Health and Protection Services for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities” program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) and funded by the European Union.
