Empowering Women in Cahul: Ukrainian Refugees Find Support Through Gender Equality Programs

Safe Space Cahul hosted a series of training and informational activities for Ukrainian refugee women, organized in collaboration with UNFPA during a monitoring visit by the organization’s representatives. These activities focused on education around gender equality and conflict management, an essential aspect for women who have experienced trauma and instability caused by the war. Twelve participants attended the event, actively engaging in discussions and exercises.

The activities included a practical session on “Gender Equality in Conflict Situations,” where participants had the opportunity to develop essential communication skills and mutual support strategies in conflict contexts. The session began with a presentation on the importance of gender equality, especially during crises and conflicts, highlighting the different ways men and women are affected by these circumstances.

A brainstorming exercise was conducted, inviting participants to associate key terms such as “equality,” “stereotypes,” “roles,” and “discrimination,” where each participant shared their thoughts and experiences. This exercise was followed by group discussions analyzing how conflicts affect men and women in their home cultures and exploring gender role stereotypes.

A significant part of the event was a role-playing activity, where participants created and acted out realistic scenarios inspired by everyday life to analyze how gender influences decisions and behaviors in conflict situations. Through this, the women had the chance to explore how gender stereotypes can limit or influence their actions in difficult moments and how they can overcome these obstacles.

The session concluded with a final discussion, where participants reflected on their feelings and reactions during the activities and identified practical ways to integrate the lessons learned into their daily lives.

UNFPA representatives emphasized the importance of such programs, pointing out that these initiatives play a crucial role in promoting gender equality and encouraging the inclusion and participation of women in decision-making processes, especially in times of crisis. The Safe Space Cahul provides a secure and welcoming environment for refugee women, offering them opportunities to learn, express themselves, and support each other in the face of the challenges they encounter.

This activity is part of the “Improving Access to Essential Health and Protection Services for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities” program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in Moldova and funded by the European Union.
