“Different, Yet United.” A public communication event in Cimislia.

The Public Association “Homecare,” in collaboration with UNFPA and the Cimișlia County Council, organized the community event “Different, Yet United” in Cimislia. This initiative aimed to facilitate dialogue between Ukrainian refugees and host communities, with a focus on preventing gender-based violence.

The main goal of this event was to support the resilience of women and girls affected by the Ukrainian refugee crisis and strengthen social cohesion in host communities. At the same time, it addressed the essential needs of both host communities and refugees, promoting their inclusion in society. The event provided an open platform for discussions on the challenges and successes faced by refugee women and girls, as well as those from host communities. Special emphasis was placed on informing participants about available services, employment opportunities, and psychosocial, social, and legal services, including cases of gender-based violence.

Violeta Terguță, the program analyst at the United Nations Population Fund, stated that the event provided an opportunity for discussions with local authorities regarding referral mechanisms, services, and humanitarian assistance for refugee women and girls, as well as Moldovan women, especially those from underrepresented groups and affected by the crisis.

Tamara Adașan, the director of the Public Association “Homecare,” emphasized that the event also aimed to raise awareness and encourage empathy for those in distress. It was an opportunity to provide support  to people in dire situations, lacking shelter or food, and in need of support from the community.

During the event, “Safe Space” employees provided informative materials to both refugees and host families on how to respond to gender-based violence and the authorities to contact in difficult situations. The communication event also included an anti-war-themed drawing contest. The audience enjoyed a performance by the singers Ion Razza and Igor Rusu, adding an artistic touch to the event.

UNFPA has established 20 static points and 6 mobile “Safe Space” services in the Republic of Moldova to provide assistance to those in need. Psychologists and social workers employed by “Homecare” are prepared to offer psychosocial support to all refugees and individuals in host communities who require assistance.

This activity is part of the program “Improving Access to Essential Health and Gender-Based Violence Protection Services for Ukrainian Refugees and Host Communities,” supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in the Republic of Moldova and funded by the European Union.
