A tale of resilience and solidarity: Finding refuge in Moldova

The  story of Svetlana and her family serves as an inspiring testament to the power of resilience and solidarity. Hailing from the Odessa region, specifically the Belgorodnestrovsk district in Sergheevka, Svetlana, a 45-year-old woman, embarked on a remarkable journey to Moldova with her 62-year-old husband, Vladimir, who had endured two minor strokes since the outbreak of war, and their 21-year-old son, Maxim, who grapples with cerebral palsy and epilepsy. On February 25, 2022, they crossed the border at Palanca and found refuge with their relatives in the town of Stefan Voda.

The remarkable aspect of their story lies not just in their escape from adversity but in their seamless adaptation to their new home and their swift integration into the local community. Despite the daunting challenges they faced, there have been no reports of gender-based violence within their family or with their neighbors. This underscores the profound strength of solidarity and mutual support that prevails within their community.

A crucial player in facilitating this family’s adaptation to life in Moldova is the Mobile Team Safe Space Homecare, in collaboration with UNFPA. The Homecare representatives have provided invaluable counseling and material assistance, contributing significantly to their overall well-being. Svetlana herself attested to the moral and psychological satisfaction she derives from interacting with the Homecare team, who have become a trusted pillar of support for her and her family.

This week, the Mobile Team Safe Space Homecare concluded their counseling activities in the Stefan Voda district, where they offered vital information on gender-based violence prevention and response, sexual and reproductive health, and the process of legitimizing their residency status in Moldova. They also disseminated information about rent and utility expense compensation programs provided by OMM, Caritas Moldova, and CRS, in addition to outlining the obligations that refugees have concerning IGM notification in case of a change in their place of residence.

Furthermore, refugees were educated about the feedback mechanism, allowing them to confidentially and personally submit complaints, questions, recommendations, or expressions of gratitude. This ensures that their voices are heard and that they receive the support they require.

The story of Svetlana’s family and the involvement of the community and mobile assistance teams serve as a compelling example of how solidarity and mutual support can profoundly transform the lives of those facing significant difficulties. With the aid of these resources and the unwavering support of the local community, Svetlana, Vladimir, and Maxim have found refuge in Moldova and are harboring hope for a brighter future.

In a world often beset by challenges and adversity, the story of Svetlana and her family reminds us of the remarkable resilience of individuals and the immense capacity of communities to come together in times of need. Their journey is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the boundless potential of solidarity to change lives for the better.
