A new gender-based violence assistance unit will be opened in Causeni at the end of November,
A new gender-based violence assistance unit for survivors will soon be launched at the Causeni Hospital. The initiative is being carried out by UNFPA Moldova in partnership with the Homecare NGO. This unit will become part of the national network consisting of 11 gender-based violence/sexual violence assistance units.
These gender-based violence assistance units are strategically integrated within the Emergency Department (ED) of medical institutions. They feature two specialized spaces for gynecological examinations and the provision of vital medical care, as well as psychological and social counseling, in accordance with international standards for such units. Additionally, there will be a bathroom, ensuring a safe and confidential space.
Women who have been victims of physical and/or sexual violence will receive immediate medical assistance on a 24/7 basis, as well as psychological support and referrals to other specialized services in a unique and safe space within the public healthcare system, preventing re-victimization.
The new facility will be equipped with gynecological chairs (adapted for individuals with mobility disabilities) and other standard medical equipment for gynecological examinations. Medications and consumables necessary for medical care in preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, will also be provided, along with the equipment for the collection of medico-legal evidence. The renovation also includes creating a friendly, safe, and confidential space equipped with furniture and equipment necessary for psycho-emotional counseling services. This space also aims to prevent re-victimization. Establishing gender-based violence assistance units is part of the National Program for Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Family Violence.
Furthermore, renovation and equipping work is being carried out for the new premises of the blood transfusion section within the hospital.
The rehabilitation and equipping work for the gender-based violence assistance units and the blood transfusion section at the Causeni Hospital are expected to be completed by the end of November.
