The Story of Galina and Ecaterina: A Journey of Integration and Courage to Start Anew

At the community center on Gheorghe Cașu Street 32 in Chișinău, two Ukrainian refugee sisters, Galina and Ecaterina, have stood out with their story and their strong desire to integrate into Moldovan society.

Galina, 56, and Ecaterina, 54, are in a period of transition, as their children are refugees in Europe, seeking better opportunities. In their absence, the sisters live with their nephews, and although they deeply miss their loved ones, they have chosen to stay in Moldova, adapting to their new reality.

Ecaterina, with a natural shyness, sought the support of Safe Space UNFPA/Homecare to improve her Romanian language skills, driven by a deep motivation to connect better with her surroundings and broaden her personal and professional horizons.

Psychologist Olesea Chircu believes that sometimes people just need inspiration and a gentle push to develop and discover new opportunities. Learning a new language is not just about better communication, but also about immersing oneself in a new culture, understanding, and appreciating the diversity around you.

For Galina and Ecaterina, Romanian-language films were their first source of learning. This simple hobby gradually grew into a genuine passion and a strong desire to speak fluently.

The sisters excitedly share how they dream of speaking like true Romanians from across the Prut River, valuing each learning experience as priceless.

In their warm eyes, you can see not only a desire to learn but also a sincere curiosity and a tremendous interest in the Romanian language and culture. With the help of Safe Space UNFPA/Homecare, the two sisters now have the chance to integrate quickly and effectively into Moldovan society.

By learning Romanian, Galina and Ecaterina are building a better future based on authentic connections and a deep understanding of the Republic of Moldova, the country that has offered them stability and support in the most challenging times of their lives. They are a powerful example of determination and courage, demonstrating that regardless of age or circumstances, the desire to learn and grow can transform lives.

This activity is part of the “Improving Access to Essential Health and Protection Services for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities” program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in Moldova and funded by the European Union.
