Spring of Hope at Home

This spring, we continue to live under the shadow of a conflict that still ravages Ukraine and Europe. People fleeing their homes, hoping for a quick return, arrive in Chișinău. The train station has become a bustling, crowded place where destinies intertwine in constant motion.

A symbol of hope and longing for home is the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag, colors now seen like our traditional “mărțișor” pinned to the clothing and accessories of Ukrainians. Hanna, a refugee from Kyiv, along with her daughter, wears a small angel made of yarn in these colors on her backpack – a message of hope and peace.

Hanna shares her story, speaking about the constant fear that has marked her life over the past two years. She has lost many loved ones: friends, acquaintances, family members. Some left in search of safety, others were taken by the conflict, leaving behind only memories and broken ties. Some are no longer with us, while others bear physical and emotional scars that will forever shape their existence.

Her story is just one of many, marked by the fear and loss caused by the war. Symbols of hope and the desire for peace take on a deep significance, reflecting the dream of those affected to one day return home to a peaceful country.

This activity is part of the program “Improving Access to Essential Health Services and Protection against Gender-Based Violence for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities,” supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in the Republic of Moldova and funded by the European Union.
