Kiril’sJourney: Seeking Refuge in Moldova
At the beginning of summer, Kiril and his wife, Elena, decided it was time to visit their relatives in Moldova. Their daughter had been inviting them for a while, but they always found reasons to decline. This time, however, they chose to see their grandchildren and take a break from the increasingly dangerous routine in Kyiv as the war continued to escalate. The family had already begun discussing the possibility of temporarily relocating to Moldova if the conflict persisted. They were curious about the available options and what life was like in Moldova.
In this context, the psychologist from “Safe Space Chișinău,” a project managed by UNFPA/Homecare, provided them with all the necessary information regarding legal stay, available forms of protection, and other services offered to refugees.
At the busy platform of Chișinău station, the crowd can often be overwhelming. People come and go constantly, all with one thought and one hope in mind: to return home in peace and safety. Elena, Kiril’s wife, shared her fears: “Fear exhausts you. Since the war began, there hasn’t been a day where I felt safe.”
Kiril’s family received the necessary support to settle in Chișinău. Elena sought psychological counseling and scheduled a meeting with the psychologist from Safe Space. The family expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to feel safe and for the guidance and support provided.
This activity is part of the “Improving Access to Essential Health and Protection Services for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities” program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in Moldova and funded by the European Union.
