Galina’s Story – An Example of Resilience and Hope
Galina, a teacher from Dnepropetrovsk, is now facing the most difficult moments of her life. At the age of 63, she recounts her experiences, reflecting on her family’s tumultuous past, which has its roots in Stalingrad during World War II. Her mother was forced to leave home under pressure from German troops. Now, she fears that she might share the same fate, driven by fear of Russian forces.
Although Galina’s hometown remains relatively peaceful, the tensions make her live in fear of a conflict similar to the one her mother experienced. She is in Moldova temporarily to obtain some important documents, but plans to return to Ukraine on the evening train.
The memories of a more peaceful life, when traveling was a joy, are now overshadowed by fear and uncertainty. However, Galina found essential support at the Safe Space, where she participated in psychological counseling sessions and was informed about the services available to refugees.
This activity is part of the program “Improving access to essential health services and protection against gender-based violence for refugees from Ukraine and those in host communities,” supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in the Republic of Moldova and funded by the European Union.
