Don’tBlameTheClothes: An Exhibition Challenging Stereotypes and Sexual Violence in Chișinău
The “Don’t Blame the Clothes” exhibition has arrived in Chișinău at the “Young Naturalists Center,” aiming to raise public awareness and challenge the social stereotypes that perpetuate sexual violence. Organized by the Homecare Association in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) and the Women’s Law Center, this exhibition highlights the painful reality of sexual violence and the importance of promoting gender equality in Moldova.
The launch event included a workshop moderated by Nicoleta Cocoță, a lawyer from the Women’s Law Center, focused on discussing gender-based violence and the social impact of stereotypes.
The audience, largely made up of teenagers, including Ukrainian refugees, was highly engaged in the discussions. Their active participation through questions and notes showed how relevant the topic is to them.
The exhibition features re-created outfits worn by victims of sexual abuse, each accompanied by an explanatory text sharing the experiences of the victims. The outfits range from pajamas to everyday wear, reinforcing the message that sexual violence can happen to anyone, regardless of what they are wearing.
The “Don’t Blame the Clothes” exhibition will be open for a week in Chișinău, following its previous display at the Chișinău Medical College.
This initiative is part of the “Improving Access to Essential Health and Protection Services for Refugees from Ukraine and Host Communities” program, supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Moldova) in Moldova and funded by the European Union.
