“CareSafe” for the Protection of Women with Reduced Mobility

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Homecare organization are launching the “CareSafe: Safe at Home” project, aimed at creating a secure environment for women and girls with reduced mobility, including those with disabilities, refugees, and members of host communities. This project provides a platform for these individuals to share their experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) if they choose to do so, and access necessary support services.

Teams of home care specialists, nurses, and social workers from two specialized centers managed by the Homecare Association, located in Ocnița and Vulcănești, are undergoing a training program focused on the prevention and response to cases of gender-based violence among individuals with reduced mobility, including women and girls with disabilities. These teams will integrate GBV prevention and response measures into their home care services.

“Our seminar addresses a frequently overlooked issue—the vulnerability of individuals with reduced mobility to domestic violence,” stated Tamara Adașan, Director of Homecare. “It is essential to develop protective mechanisms and support systems for these individuals. The partnership with UNFPA enables us to implement practical solutions and establish a strong support network for the most vulnerable members of the community.”

The event features sessions focused on identifying the types of violence affecting individuals with reduced mobility, such as physical, psychological, and financial abuse. Participants discuss the impact of these abuses on physical and mental health, reviewing statistical data and best practices in violence prevention.

Seminar sessions are designed to enhance communication skills with victims, recognize signs of abuse, and implement strategies to create a safe and supportive environment. These efforts empower women and girls with reduced mobility to speak about their experiences with violence if they wish, and provide support in accessing specialized services, such as psychological, social, and legal assistance. Additionally, a special session is dedicated to preventing sexual exploitation and abuse among individuals with reduced mobility.

The “Santa Ana” Medico-Social Center in Vulcănești and the “Santa Agata” Medico-Social Center in Ocnița, where the “CareSafe” project will be piloted, offer services to both the local population and Ukrainian refugees, serving as central support points for the community.

The seminar will conclude with a presentation of available resources at the local and national levels, followed by a feedback and conclusion session.

The project aims to enhance the mechanisms for responding to gender-based violence and promote gender equality, aligning with the sustainable development goals set by UNFPA and local partners.
